It is true to say that not all cases of depression are a result of a wrong outlook on life, sometimes though it does have a bearing. One recent ten year study showed that depressed persons often interpret situations incorrectly. The depressed person feels lonely and sad because s/he erroneously thinks that s/he is inadequate and deserted, explains one psychiatrist.

So depressed people must work positively if they can muster the internal energy to correct their thinking before the symptoms of depression get worse. Pondering on negative things in life incessantly will not make an individual feel happy. If you feed the mind with unhappy sensations, violence, crime, low quality tv or other visual imagery which is damaging to people generally, you will of course be mindfully putting yourself in a situation where it is impossible for you to be happy. If you surround yourself with negative people and emotions on a personal level, this can rub off on you if you are not very careful. If you put yourself in a position of a negative bad atmosphere, it is hardly conducive to a state of well-being and personal happiness.

However, what you ponder upon in life, whether these be negative thoughts or positive thoughts, at times even with the very best of intentions, it can be very difficult to think ‘correctly’. All of us have our faults and it’s no good beating yourself up if at times you feel that you do not measure up to the high standards that you set for yourself or that others expect and demand from you daily. If you do feel that you are sliding down into depressing thoughts, depressing feelings or depressing emotions, try to quickly enact a positive strategy plan to stop those negative feelings from driving you down further in despair and hopelessness. Dwelling on negativity is not good for you. Cut it out, do something straightaway, go for a walk, pick up a good motivational book, read an inspiring story, go for a cycle ride anything you can to get yourself away from the negative situation. Don’t beat up on yourself, recognise the feeling and move on. Excessive feelings of guilt sometimes accompany depression. Just realize that everyone makes mistakes, you are not the only one feeling like this. Everyone has their faults and their strengths. Turn your perceived weakness into a strength and over time with patience and practice, you too could soon be not only combating your own depression, fighting your negative feelings but in doing so, you become a pillar of light and inspiration to others going through the same feelings presently.
